In an ideal world every piece of rotating equipment would stay completely trouble free from the date of installation. Due to factors such as corrosion, product build up, material deflection and the likes of casting inaccuracies on new equipment, rotating elements regularly go ‘out of balance’ creating nacceptable vibration levels.
When a rotating element goes out of balance it is usually more cost effective to avoid sending a unit off-site to be balanced. To reduce costs and downtime these elements are balanced in-situ. This avoids the need to remove the element from its bearings and housing. There are certain definite benefits to balancing the element in-situ, such as:
- Reduced downtime by not having to remove and then re-install the unit
- Elimination of the reactive maintenance labour costs
- In-situ balancing takes into account the actual running condition of the unit
- Final vibration figures can be taken once balanced, enabling additional issues to be highlighted and resolved.
